Science

Do different shaped bubble wands make different shaped bubbles?
Could you do an experiment and find out for me?
First, we need to make some bubble wands …

How to make a bubble wand
What you need:
• 4 wooden lolly sticks or 4 pencils
• 4 pipe cleaners
What you do:
1. Bend each of the pipe cleaners to make a shape – a square, a circle, a
rectangle and a triangle. Make sure you leave about 5cms at each
end of the pipe cleaner free.
2. Twist the pipe cleaner at the base of the shape.
3. Split the free ends of the pipe cleaner and twist these tightly
around the end of your lolly stick or pencil. Now, let’s get experimenting!

Art

I wonder if you can paint a bubble picture using the colours in the poem (See Literacy Booklet above page 14.

You will need some cups or bowls filled with bubble mixture.
Put a few drops of paint or food colouring into each one so that you have
pink bubble mixture, blue bubble mixture, yellow bubble mixture etc.
Blow into each bubble mixture so that you get lots of coloured bubbles.
Now press a piece of paper or card on top of each cup/bowl to make a
colourful bubble picture.

Art

Can you colour the pictures that were in the poem in the right colour? (See Literacy Booklet Page 21)

Discover all about bears this week. Find out about who sings the song The Bare Necessities and all about the different famous bears in stories and films. Hold your own teddy bears’ picnic and write an invitation to invite your friends and family. Read the story of Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson and discover all about real bears and what they do.

When following links online, parents should monitor that children are remaining on that page only and are keeping safe online.

Monday

Listen to the song The Bare Necessities from The Jungle Book:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6e3ITsjLRI  Repeat and join in where you can.

Discuss some of the words and phrases in the song and their meanings, such as bare necessities, roam, strife, rest at ease, etc. You could use Word Hippo www.wordhippo.com  to find out what they mean with an adult.

Draw a picture of Baloo the bear. Watch the clip again, this time pausing to talk about what he looks like, what he likes to eat and things he likes to do.

Write some sentences about Baloo, around or underneath his picture.

Use ideas from listening to the song and watching the film clip to help you, e.g. Baloo is a huge grey bear. He likes to eat ants which tickle his tongue. He enjoys his back being rubbed on the trees to scratch it. He loves to relax in the water and float along …

Check for capital letters and full stops. Can you include some sentences with the word ‘and’ in to join ideas?

Tuesday

Discuss what famous bears from story books or films you know, e.g. Rupert, Paddington, Winnie the Pooh, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Pudsey Bear, Yogi Bear, etc. Ask an adult who their favourite bear is. Can they tell you about them?

Watch some opening clips below on bears you might not know, to find out a little more about them, e.g. Rupert the Bear (up to 1:00min) https://www.youtube.c om/watch?v=hxwFaH7l 53Y Winnie the Pooh https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j21f7aeTrbc Yogi Bear

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCSuZLjfJdk

Which one do you like? Why? Draw your favourite bear and write a short fact file about them. This could include:

Name  Friends  Likes to eat

Enjoys  Dislikes

Talk about your favourite teddy bear, if you have one, or your favourite soft toy. Tell an adult all about them.

Draw a picture of your teddy/soft toy and write a short fact file in the same way about them too. Remember to check for capital letters for their name and use your phonics to help you spell words in your writing.

Wednesday

Listen to the Teddy Bears’ Picnic song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDndFOtBy-E Join in with the words if you can: Teddy Bears’ Picnic – Karaoke Track (Some American spellings) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KScOKX7kSn4

Read with an adult Real Bears Picnic and the Did You Know sections from this webpage about the history of the Teddy Bears’ Picnic: https://www.totallyteddybears.com/teddybearspicnic.html#sthash.vwhimyvb.p1plVw26.dpbs Consider holding your own teddy bears’ picnic. Write a list of the things you will need to get ready, e.g.  Picnic rug Sandwiches Crisps Juice Think about inviting your own teddy bears/soft toys or your family and friends with their teddy bears.

Write an invitation to your Teddy Bears’ Picnic.

To: For: Time: Date: Place: From:

Check your writing for capital letters for names and places. Use phonics for spelling too.

Send/post your invitations and host your own teddy bears picnic with your guests!

Thursday

What do you know about real bears? Talk to an adult about what you already know about bears and then think about what you would like to know.  Write a few questions that you would like to ask about bears, e.g. How many types of bear are there? Where do they live? What do they eat? Check your questions have a capital letter at the start and a question mark at the end. Watch The Bear, A Very Cute Mammal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3snCVlrJ8  to see if you can find out some of the answers to your questions. Discuss anything else you found out too.

Write an information poster using some of the information you have found out. This could include: Title Introductory sentence/s What types of bear are there? Where do bears live? What do bears look like? What do bears eat? Did you know? (Interesting fact box)

You could add illustrations or pictures to your poster. Check capital letters, full stops, question marks and remember to use phonics for spelling too!

Friday

Talk about how some bears are nocturnal so sleep during the day. Some bears hibernate which means that they sleep through the winter.

Read the story of The Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCkRtyXqfg

Keep pausing the video to orally retell what happens throughout the story.

Write a diary as if you were the mouse, retelling the events of the day.  Remember to write using the word ‘I’ and to include capital letters, full stops and sentences with the word ‘and’ and ‘but’ in. Can you include an exclamation mark and a question mark too?

Here's an example of a diary. This morning I crawled into a cave from the cold snow. It was too damp and dark so I lit a fire. The coals popped but it didn’t wake the big bear who was sleeping in there. Then … Next… Later… Finally…

When you have finished, check for capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks.

Art

Encourage child to take a photograph of themselves. Child to draw picture of themselves. Encourage them to mark make onto this surface using felt tipped pens or watercolour paints.

Music

Listen to Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev. Identify the animals/ characters portrayed by the music and the instruments used to help portray them. The animals/characters to identify are: Peter, duck, cat, Grandpa, wolf, birds, hunters The instruments used to help identify them are: Oboe, bassoon, French horn, timpani, strings, flutes If you would like to find out more, look at how Walt Disney turned this into a piece of film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Va8Uz6MoKLg

Monday

Say together the phrase: to infinity and beyond!  Do you know who says this? Ask your child if they know anything about the character Buzz Lightyear.  Watch: https://www.youtube.c om/watch?v=2VSYmGSJ tCA

Talk about what Buzz Lightyear looks like and who his friends are. Is he a good character or a bad character?

With an adult, read some fun facts about Buzz Lightyear here: https://kids.kiddle.co/B uzz_Lightyear and  https://www.celebratio nspress.com/2017/09/1 1/ten-things-you-maynot-know-about-buzzlightyear/

Play Ask the Expert! where siblings or other adults ask your child about Buzz Lightyear. Can they talk like an expert, saying everything they know about him?

Write a Buzz Lightyear fact file for someone to read. It could include answers to these prompts: What does he look like?  Where did he get his name from? How does he act? Who are his friends?

Challenge: Can they include a special Did you know …? fact box using a question mark.

Check for a capital letter at the start of a sentence/character name and a full stop at the end of each sentence. Encourage your child to use their phonics to help them.

Tuesday

Remind your child of the man the Buzz Lightyear character is named after: Buzz Aldrin. Do they know who he is?

Watch the clip of Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong walking on the moon here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/ bitesize/clips/zy89wmn

with a grown up or sibling.

Write a brief quiz for your family to answer. Consider using a question hand to help you think of question words to start your question with.

Remember to include a question mark at the end of each question.  Check for capital letters and question marks. Ensure phonics is used to help with spelling.

Wednesday

Read and enjoy Whatever Next by Jill Murphy: https://www.youtube.c om/watch?v=6c5cb0u0r PM

Repeat, this time trying to join in with the retelling as the book is read aloud.  Finally read again, this time with the sound muted so that you and your child can retell the story in your own words. Encourage your child to include the words first, next, then, after a while, finally etc. to help them in their retelling.  After orally retelling the story, with an adult you are now going to make a zigzag book of the story for your family to read. Follow the simple instructions together here on how to make a zigzag book: https://www.youtube.c om/watch?v=21qi9ZcQ Vto (Adult supervision required).

Remember to use capital letters, full stops and phonics for spelling.  Aim to include ‘and’ and ‘but’ in some of your sentences, e.g. He packed his teddy and some food for the journey.  He landed on the moon but nobody was there.

Keep re-reading your sentences to check that they make sense and that you haven’t missed any words out!

Thurday

Read Whatever Next by Jill Murphy: https://www.youtube.c om/watch?v=6c5cb0u0r PM

Imagine that you are Baby Bear and you want to tell someone about your day.  Go through your zigzag book of the story and think about how Baby Bear would be feeling and what he might be thinking at each part of the journey, e.g. He would be feeling disappointed that his mum wouldn’t let him go to the moon, or he would be excited as he took off up the chimney. Orally say what his thoughts and feelings would be as you go through your zigzag story book. Write a diary entry now as if you are Baby Bear and you have just come back from your day on the moon. Remember to include the thoughts and feelings throughout and use the word ‘I’ as if you are writing as Baby Bear.  E.g. Last night my mum asked me to have a bath but I wanted to go to the moon. I was disappointed that she wouldn’t let me go. I made a rocket from a box under the stairs, put on my space helmet and books and flew up the chimney. I felt so excited to start my trip … Check for capital letters for the start of sentences and for the word ‘I.’ Try to use phonics for the spelling of new words and re- read your sentences each time to check they make sense. Can you include the word ‘and’ and ‘but’, and maybe an exclamation mark to show some excitement or surprise!

Friday

With an adult using one of the weblinks below, follow instructions on how to make a rocket: https://www.youtube.c om/watch?v=Z3mHbI96 Aqw or  https://www.youtube.c om/watch?v=HlZ2yyroo S8 or https://www.youtube.c om/watch?v=ZPdbS_JN oqY Once your rocket is complete, talk about how you made it using sequencing words such as: first, next, then, finally and doing words such as cut, stick, glue, tape, put etc. Remember to retell the instructions in the correct order! Write down your instructions in full sentences for someoneelse to follow.  Make sure they are in the correct order using the words discussed previously. Include a ‘what you need’ section at the top of the page and make sure you number each instruction.  You could add diagrams or even video yourself making the rocket to go with your instructions too!

Check for capital letters and full stops. Read through the instructions to check that they make sense before giving them to someone to follow.

Monday

Discover the world of the Mr Men and Little Miss characters. Find out about their original author Roger Hargreaves and discover how he created them. Read their stories and create a new story based on Mr Strong!

Tuesday

Ask your child if they have heard of the Mr Men or Little Miss characters? Do they know any of their names? What do they look like? Can they describe the ones they know? Watch: https://www.youtube.c om/watch?v=1cs1OrGU tBY (up until 0:42 mins) Can they spot any that they know?
Look on the webpage: https://www.mrmen.co m/characters/ Find out more about the ones you know by clicking on their picture. Discover some new ones and read with an adult all about them. Can you describe them orally? What do they enjoy/like? What do they look like?

Additional challenge

Imagine that you’ve been asked to write a set of instructions for another character on this page who hasn’t got any instructions. https://www.mrmen.co m/activities/ or Design your own character using some of the ideas by looking at some of the other characters. If you opt for the latter, draw the character first, telling an adult how you did it using words such as, first, next, then etc. and bossy verbs such as draw, put, wiggle etc.
Remember to order your instructions with numbers so they are easy to follow.
Check for capital letters and full stops.
Can someone follow your instructions to make the character?

Wednesday

Watch the story of Mr Strong: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aZ3SDzKKqk Discuss what they have read by asking questions, e.g. What can he do because he is so strong? What does he love to eat? Why did he break his toothbrush? How do you think he felt when everything he touched was breaking? Etc.
Retell the story orally in your own words by looking at the story of Mr Strong again but potentially muting the words being read aloud https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8aZ3SDzKKqk
Discuss what other healthy food could make Mr Strong so strong? Watch Bananaman Cartoon Intro Opening Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ig70brsVHyo and Popeye Theme Song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pbcieG3Tec to gain inspiration. Decide on a healthy food that Mr Strong could eat to make him strong to change the story.
Make a list of all the foods that he could eat to make him strong or draw them on a paper plate/ round piece of paper and label them, e.g. carrots, cabbage, apples, beans, oily fish etc. This could be a healthy meal for Mr Strong!
Encourage your child to independently use their phonics to help them spell the words.

Thursday

Look at the list of healthy foods created in the previous session. Replace the eggs in the story of Mr Strong with an item from the list of food you made yesterday.
Over the next two days, write your own version of the story of Mr Strong, changing what he eats to become strong and including two things that he breaks because he is so strong, e.g. This is the story of Mr Strong. He is the strongest person in the whole wide world! He can bend an iron bar with his bare hands and throw a cannonball. He can hammer nails into the wall using his finger! The secret of his strength is ... (input new food here)! The more … That morning he was having … After his breakfast he …
Check for capital letters, full stops and use of an exclamation mark. Ensure the word ‘and’ has been used to join ideas in a sentence.

Friday

Read over the start of the story which you started yesterday. Check for capital letters for the start of sentences and names. Check for full stops, exclamation marks and the use of the word ’and’.
Continue to write the second part of your story to complete it. First he went through his front door … Then he … Finally he …
Make sure that the reward for helping the farmer is the new food that you’ve chosen for Mr Strong to eat.
Finish your story by including a different food to trick your readers, just like icecream was used in the original such as: chocolate, crisps, sweets, ice lolly etc.
Check for capital letters, full stops and use of an exclamation mark. Ensure the word ‘and’ has been used to join ideas in a sentence.

Science

Ask your child to find 10 objects of their choice but explain that they must try to collect items that are different from one another.

Key vocabulary to listen out for (but not to share, yet): Plastic, rock, metal, glass, wood, clay, hard, soft, stretchy, stiff, bendy, floppy, waterproof. absorbent, breaks, tears, rough, smooth, shiny, dull, see-through, not see-through.

Monday

Talk to your child about the postman/lady being someone who helps us. Ask: Do you know what job they do? Can you spot them coming down the street? What do they wear? What happens when they come to your door? What do they bring? How do they travel?
Watch Postman – Rhymes on Profession https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLIrP1d8ZI4
Pause frequently to discuss some of the vocabulary, such as profession, roam, plight, inform, etc.
Draw a picture of a postman/lady and write down some of the things they bring/do/ wear, e.g. My postman wears a red uniform. He carries a big bag full of letters and bills. They have to read the address to check the mail gets to the right person. Encourage the use of independent phonics for spelling.
Check for capital letters and full stops. Can your child include a sentence that uses ‘and’ and a sentence that uses ‘but’?

Tuesday

Check if the postman/lady has been to your house today or yesterday. What did they bring? A parcel, letter, birthday card, bill, flyer, etc.
Talk about if you were to write a birthday card or letter to someone. What would you do to make sure it gets to them? What would we need to know?
Consider writing a note, card or letter to another family member. This could be for a specific purpose or just a note to say that you are thinking of them at this time, with a brief explanation of what you have been up to at home.
Look at the front of a piece of mail that has arrived recently at your house. What does it have on the front to make sure it gets posted through your door? I.e. the correct name and address.

Once your note has been written, find out the full name and address of the person you wish to send it to. Write on an envelope the correct name and address in full. Ensure you spell Mr, Mrs or Miss correctly with a capital letter and that the format of the address follows lines underneath each other. Check for capital letters for names, the street name, town/city and county. Don’t forget the postcode too!

Watch Journey of a Letter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pFd8DLcPIY Talk about what you have just seen. Whatelse do you need to make sure your note/card/letter gets to the recipient? (A stamp). Where do you put the stamp? Have a look at your mail to find out.

If a stamp can be purchased, consider walking to the nearest post box to post your note/card/letter. Wait to find out if your friend or relative receives it!

Wednesday

Look at the front cover of the book The Jolly Postman or Other People’s Letters by Janet and Allan Ahlberg.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpeo0yoD0k (Pause the clip at 0:03 mins to look closely at the book cover). Discuss why the postman might be described as being jolly. What does that word mean? Can you use the word jolly orally in a sentence?
Ask your child: Do you know any of the characters on the front of this book? Where have you seen them before? What stories or rhymes are they from?

Predict why the familiar characters might be receiving letters from the Jolly Postman. Who might have sent them? What might they say?

Begin to read the story of The Jolly Postman or Other People’s Letters by Janet and Allan Ahlberg: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpeo_0yoD0k Pause at each envelope and after reading the address to predict who the letter/leaflet/ postcard etc. is for.

Write a list of who the mail is for, what type it is and who the sender is, e.g. First of all there is a letter of apology for Mr and Mrs Bear and Baby Bear from Goldilocks. Next there is a leaflet for the Wicked Witch from Hansel and Gretel from the Hobgoblin Company. There is also a postcard for the giant from Jack, etc. Check for capital letters for names of the characters, words such as Mr or Mrs, plus at the start of sentences. Check for full stops at the end of sentences.

Thursday

Revisit the characters who feature in The Jolly Postman or Other People’s Letters by Janet and Allan Ahlberg: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpeo_0yoD0k Look at the list created yesterday. Choose your favourite character from the book or the most familiar one. Consider what they might write back if they were to write a response to their mail, e.g. the Bear family’s response to Goldilocks or Cinderella’s response to Peter Piper.
Discuss orally what they might say back, e.g. The Bear family might thank Goldilocks for her apology and explain to her how she can behave by being kind and thoughtful or Cinderella might say ‘thank you’ for her letter and describe her new life in the palace.

Write as if you were the character replying to the sender.

Check writing includes capital letters, full stops and possibly a question, e.g. if writing a letter back to Goldilocks, the Bear family could ask, ‘Please can you not take things that are not yours?’

Friday

Consider other characters which could also have featured in the story, e.g. the Big Bad Wolf saying sorry to the Three Little Pigs, the Gingerbread Man saying sorry for stealing everybody's food or the Troll apologising to the Three Billy Goats Gruff for scaring them.
Write a new page for the book as if you were apologising for what you had done, e.g. the Big Bad Wolf saying sorry to the Three Little Pigs, the Gingerbread Man saying sorry for stealing everybody’s food or the Troll apologising to the Three Billy Goats Gruff for scaring them.
Check capital letters for the start of the sentences and for names of people and places. Also check for full stops at the end of sentences. Try to include the words ‘and’ and ‘but’ in some sentences

Re-read The Ugly Five by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69K2IZ1A1ZU

Ask your child to use the prompts first, next, then, after that and finally to describe which animal was seen and in which order.

Return back to the vocabulary collected yesterday on each of the animals.

Begin to compose the recount using the above prompts and the vocabulary collected in the previous session, e.g.

Yesterday I went on a safari tour to see The Ugly Five. First I saw the ugly wildebeest. It had spindly legs and a gingery beard. I could see its big chunky chest and its skinny behind. It looked really weird… Next I saw… Then I saw… After that I saw… Finally, I saw…

Each animal can be described using the vocabulary collected.

Check their own writing for spelling using phonics, capital letters for the start of sentences and for the word ‘I’, full stops and use of the word ‘and’ and ‘but.’

Challenge: Research the other animals at the back of the book, e.g. The Big Five. Write a recount as if they had seen these animals instead, after gathering some vocabulary about them.

Topic
Design a quiz for your family. You will need to think of a set of questions and answers which can be grouped
into categories. Eg History Category - When was The Great Fire of London?

Literacy

Read and enjoy The Ugly Five by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.

https://www.youtube.com/watchv=69K2IZ1 A1ZU

Remind your child that these animals are described by the author as to why they think they are ugly. Can they spot words or phrases which describe each of the five to suggest why they might be thought of as ’ugly’? E.g. The spotted hyena has a spiky mane and spotty skin. He looks grotty and has a voice with a mixture of giggles and groans etc. Orally tell an adult about each animal. Ask your child to imagine they are on a safari tour, viewing ‘The Ugly Five’ animals in the wild. Explain to your child that their challenge is to write a recount of what they have seen for their friends and family back home, including some description of the five animals.

Go back to each animal in turn and jot down words or phrases which describe them. Note: these do not have to be in full sentences today. The focus here is to gather vocabulary, e.g. The Wildebeest spindly legs and gingery beard, big chunky chest and skinny behind, weird Repeat with the other four animals.

Watch and enjoy the clip on the Ten Jungle Animals for Kids.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qgK1WdYq_aw (Note: this is an American clip so pronunciation of some animals may differ). Ask your child which animal they found the most interesting and why? I liked the …because…

Repeat watching the section of the clip where their favourite animal appears, pausing as you do so for your child to retell the facts that they have heard. Ask them to become the expert on that animal and go and tell someone else in their household all about it.

Ask your child to write a fact file on this animal in sentences including the information that they have heard, e.g. Jaguars

Jaguars are very big cats and are about six feet long. They sleep up in the trees. They eat lots of other animals like deer, monkeys, snakes or fish.

Ask your child to draw a picture of the animal and label it too.

They could also include a ‘did you know’ question, such as: Did you know that jaguars love water and are great swimmers? Check for capital letters, full stops, use of the word ‘and’ and ‘or’ and also the question mark.

Literacy

Read again Rumble in the Jungle encouraging your child to join in with the verses if they can. https://www.booktrust.org.uk/books-andreading/have-somefun/storybooks-andgames/rumble-in-thejungle/

Ask your child to write a short list of animals that live in the jungle that they have heard about in the book. Ask your child to try and spell these animal names independently without peeking at the book, using their phonics knowledge. (Note: There is no expectation that your child should be able to spell all of these words correctly at this age. They should, however, be encouraged to think about the sounds in the words and ways of spelling each of the sounds).

Watch the opening scene of the film The Lion King (up to 2:58 mins):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zn_qirpdBag.

Watch again but this time pause to discuss and add to the list of animals which live in the jungle. Talk about animals they perhaps have not seen before. Encourage independent spelling again using their phonic knowledge and clapping of the syllables of the animal names, e.g. vulture (two claps), zebra (two claps), elephant (three claps) and hyena (three claps). This list could be recorded as a chart by sorting the animals with one clap, two claps and three claps etc.

Look up the rest of the animals shown and add to the list.

Choose your favourite animal and try and reread that verse either independently or along with the voice over. Ask your child to put actions to some of the words to help them remember,
e.g. big (wide open arms). Ask your child, Why is it your favourite animal in
the book? Encourage them to say words or phrases from the text which describe the animal and then
complete the prompt orally, e.g. I like the … because … Write a few sentences on their favourite animal from the book. Encourage
your child to use words from the text and the word ‘and’, e.g. I like the
gorilla the best because he is big, black and hairy. He is ferocious and scary. He makes me laugh when he wallops his chest.
Check for capital letters at the start of sentences, full stops at the end, the
use of ‘and’ and the capital letter for the word ‘I.’
